MARLON TOBIAS is a visual artist influenced by the marginalized narratives of the communities he is a part of. As New York native born from a mother of southern roots and a father of Jamaican descent, Marlon is informed by history and the multifaceted spirit of the African diaspora. Using the history of drawing and painting as an anchor, he chronicles the rich stories framed within the context of my subject’s daily lives.
Often sourcing from old family photos, personally taken photos, audio recordings, oral and documented histories, as well as collected objects, Marlon provides an intimate look into the individual people who have shaped his community’s cultures and traditions. In this spirit of his extensive visual documentation, Marlon Tobias lives his life as an artist, archivist, historian, and storyteller. At the core, his work strives to reveal the richness of African American life.
Marlon’s works have been shown at the Museum of Florida Art and Culture, Art Center Sarasota and the Contemporary Art Museum in Tampa, Florida.
Marlon Tobias received his MFA at the University of South Florida and his Bachelor's degree in Communication and Design from the Florida A&M University.
